Flourish! At the Very ‘Rary

Density512, Panoramic Voices Choirs and The Contemporary Austin present Flourish!, an interactive one-act musical full of nature, fantasy, and community. You’ll be right there in the Faerie Glen, next to Lady Bird Lake among the trees at Laguna Gloria’s outdoor amphitheater.

Flourish! features an improvising band and choir. A mixture of singable themes and conducted group improvisation (“Conduction”) invites the audience to lend their voice to the show. Cast members will take suggestions from the audience as lyric inspiration. Featuring an original story and music by AV Villarreal and Kenzie Slottow, the cast, and YOU!

The Story of Flourish!

For years the faerie elders have maintained balance in the Glen with magical music of healing and growth. But the faerie youth are impatient to mix up new spell songs. When their methods clash, The Dissonance threatens to leave the faeries scattered through the forest, and the Glen sapped and abandoned. Only with the help of your kiddos will they be able to save the Glen!

The Very ‘Rary Event

Flourish! will take place as part of The Very ‘Rary, a once-a-year afternoon of art and amazement event at Laguna Gloria benefitting The Contemporary Austin's K-12 arts education programs.

Kids and adults alike are invited to explore the grounds and meet the fairies during the Very ‘Rary event at 1pm. Head to the amphitheater for the Flourish performance at 1:45pm. This whimsical show invites audiences to come as faeries themselves, learn the songs and rhythms of the Glen, and experience the power of communal creation.

Artistic Leads

Creative duo AV Villarreal (they/them) and Kenzie Slottow (they/them) combine their powers of improv, theatre, music, education and composition to create and co-direct Flourish! AV is the Music Director of the Panoramic Voices Youth Choir, writes and leads children’s worship music as Director of Music Ministries at University United Methodist Church, and formerly taught public school choir in Austin and Leander ISD. Kenzie teaches middle school flute, conducts improvising ensembles, and produces interactive theatrical productions (MoonFall, Natatorium) for Density512 and its collaborators (Red Nightfall Dance Theatre, American Berserk Theater). At home, spouses AV and Kenzie weave collaborative stories for fun with their friends playing Dungeons & Dragons!
